Power Outage 08/20/2007

I had every intention of blogging yesterday...and then the power went out in the middle of the afternoon and stayed off for a few hours.  So, no blog.  Instead I read for awhile, took a little cat nap, did some chores around the house, rested my sore ankle.

Have you ever noticed how power outages or other "unplanned detours" can be a blessing.  I didn't know I needed to power down myself yesterday afternoon.  But since I didn't have a choice, the body took over from the brain and I had a restful day.

Which was a good thing because today was my first session with my trainer, Drew, at 24 Hour Fitness.  We had a meet and greet last week but this was the first time we worked together.  He was very good at tailoring the reps, the resistance and the weights to my current level of fitness.  I was encouraged because I remember more than I thought I would after a year off of formal training.  Posture, breathing, form, it all came back pretty easily.

Which is not to say that I won't be sore tomorrow.  I'm pretty sure I will.  But one of the nice things about starting fresh with Drew is that I'm not pushing myself to instantly be at the level I was when I left off.  Then I would be discouraged.

One of my favorite "unplanned detours" was an ice storm when we lived in Toccoa, GA. There was a power outage, but since we lived in town ours only lasted a few hours. But our friends who lived in the county were w/o power (and thus heat) for days, and some also did not have water, or at least hot water. So it happened that we ended up with an impromptu party of 7 adults, 3 children and 2 cats in our small house. Folks w/o water had an opportunity for showers and laundry; we cobbled together an amazingly good meal out of whatever folks were rescuing from their defrosting refrigerators; we watched movies, played games, and had a great time.

We had a similar experience during the '92 earthquake. We had water but a family we knew who lived close by did not. We didn't realize they were without water until they called. They had plenty to drink with the bottled water provided by Miller Brewing Company. What they were really craving was a shower! So they came over and showered at our house.

We've also said often that the way we got to know our neighbors in Santa Clarita was an earthquake. All of a sudden we had common issues, common purpose and common goals. Minor disasters make good neighbors.
